Duncan Lloyd – One Stop Closer to the Dam
Duncan Lloyd’s “One Stop Closer to the Dam” is an interesting combination of retro and modern sounds that feels like a moving time clock crashing into the present day. It begins with a solid, groovy rhythm section, bass and drums linked in with smooth confidence, establishing a laid-back but head-nodding rhythm. The guitars, embraced by nostalgia, pass on raw garage rock melody while incorporating complicated sounds of exotica for a strange, cinematic perspective. The vocals provide a hazy, sad tone, with a reverbed atmosphere characteristic of late 1960s psychedelia. However, the singing style and tone show a post-punk influence: distanced but expressive, personal nevertheless aggressive. The production balances DIY simplicity and precise layers, giving the song a nostalgic feel while remaining sharply modern. Lloyd has created something that is both psychedelic, raw and sophisticated.
