Blue Umbrella – Tropical Storm

‘Blue Umbrella’ opens with the sound of acoustic guitars, which give the arrangement a folk character. Soon after, the drums and the rest of the instrumentation slowly join in. The song then moves towards alternative rock, maintaining its folk roots and incorporating slight 1960s influences in the backing vocals. Overall, the production works well, although the high frequencies could benefit from some additional EQ adjustment to make the mix smoother. The nostalgic lyrics have the attitude of an old-school love song, expressing the feeling of accepting that a relationship may have to end. The raw, mature vocal style adds another dimension, bringing a garage rock sound that fits the music particularly well. While there are moments that recall artists ranging from The Fuzztones to the Ramones, the song maintains its own distinctively relaxed folk-rock identity. The contrast between the acoustic basis and the rougher garage-rock vocals is what makes the track so interesting. It feels like a meeting point between a vintage love song and an alternative rock performance, with enough imperfections in the performance to give it a lived-in, human character.
