Paper Citizen – Into The Wild
“Into The Wild” begins with unique vibraphone-like sounds that create a mystery and slightly exotic atmosphere. A deep beat soon appears, changing the piece into a modern dance groove while preserving its indie-pop roots. The production is especially excellent in its use of space and movement, with panning effects that allow individual sections to move across the stereo field, giving the music a distinct cosmic vibe. Claire Gohst’s vocals add another unique dimension, switching between an ethereal indie-pop style and influences that remind one of Björk and Florence + The Machine. The following addition of male vocals results in a lovely duet, giving contrast and level of emotion. The song moves between a mid-tempo ballad and a dance-inspired track, never really committing to either, making the composition highly intriguing. The combination of deep electronic beats, distinctive percussion, melodic vocals and cleverly placed stereo effects (panning) results in a warm and adventurous listening experience. “Into The Wild” perfectly captures its concept of dealing with an increasingly loud and overwhelming world by constructing its own cosmic and exotic musical atmosphere. It is an atmospheric indie-pop piece with enough groove to move to while preserving a dreamy, almost supernatural vibe.
