Eddie Skuller – You Can Never Hold Back Spring
Eddie Skuller, a Jersey City singer-songwriter, provides a touching performance of Tom Waits’ “You Can Never Hold Back Spring,” offering a new perspective to one of the iconic songwriter’s most moving songs. Working with producer Nick Kinsey, whose credits include Kevin Morby, Waxahatchee, and Scott McMickey, Skuller keeps the original’s lyrical core while bringing a brighter and more modern sound character. The end result is a version that honours the song’s never-ending themes of optimism, rebirth, and perseverance. The music begins with the familiar sadness of the accordion, reproducing the atmosphere of the original song, but shortly thereafter establishes its own distinct identity. The guitars are more obvious in the mix, bringing warmth and minor 1960s-inspired melodic elements that give the composition a more upbeat, almost cheerful air. It’s as if spring symbolises the light at the end of a long journey, slowly replacing sadness with hope. The arrangement is pleasantly soft, boosted by Ryder Cooley of the Dust Bowl Faeries’ expressive accordion music, which maintains the feelings of the original while adding warmth and complexity. Nick Kinsey plays beautiful drums and keyboards, Jack Skuller adds elegant guitar lines that expand the song’s melodic background, and experienced bassist Jeremy Chatzky (Bruce Springsteen, Steve Earle, Ronnie Spector) supports the arrangement with a beautiful low end. Together, the musicians produce a layered and detailed soundtrack that allows each instrument to function properly. Eddie Skuller performs the vocals with exceptional clarity, authenticity, and control of emotions, creating a lovely contrast between the song’s melancholy instrumental setting and its upbeat lyrical message. Rather than trying to replicate Tom Waits’ distinctive style, Skuller makes the song his own with a warm, expressive performance that emphasises peaceful optimism. The modern production improves every element while maintaining the recording’s natural vibe. Finally, “You Can Never Hold Back Spring” succeeds by finding a balance between melancholy and hope, reminding listeners that rebirth is unavoidable even after times of loss, uncertainty, or mental distress.
