PHURBA – The Wheel
“The Wheel” begins with a strong post-punk and darkwave style, putting the listener in a dark and gothic atmosphere. From the beginning, the music recalls the spirit of iconic 1980s acts such as The Mission and The Sisters of Mercy, respecting the dark sounds and melodic aesthetics that distinguished the era. The vocal performance adds another layer of personality to the track. Instead of a polished performance, the vocals maintain a rough, old-school punk attitude that contrasts well with the more atmospheric music. Although the tempo stays in the mid-range, the performance is intense enough to make the track interesting without relying on speed. The mysterious melodies are one of the song’s best features. They reinforce the gothic atmosphere and give the composition a nostalgic vibe. In terms of production, the audio mix could use a little more clarity. A slight EQ adjustment, particularly to improve the presentation of individual instruments, could be helpful in revealing some of the finer elements that are now obscured within the mix, especially when listening through headphones. The songwriting and melodic ideas are already excellent, but a slightly more transparent production would allow them to stand out even more. Overall, “The Wheel” is an engaging mix of post-punk, darkwave, and gothic rock influences. With its ghostly melodies, genuine atmosphere, and raw vocal performance, Phurba created a tune that respects the genre’s classic roots while still providing a strong framework of its own. With a small modification to the production, this might become an even more powerful and immersive listening experience.
