Meredith Trosper – Rivers and Roads

When guitarist Steven Christofor saw Meredith Trosper play “Rivers and Roads,” he was inspired to arrange his own version of the song, which led to additional collaboration between the two on other tracks for her album. The recording took place at Horizon Music Group in New Haven, Connecticut, under the supervision of producer Vic Steffens, and the mixing was done by renowned producer John Agnello, who has worked with Cyndi Lauper, Sonic Youth, and Patti Smith. Musically, the music creates an ethereal mood enhanced by slight Soul and R&B influences. The vocal tone follows the tempo at a slow, thoughtful pace, allowing the emotional impact of the performance to progressively develop. As the song evolves, it transforms into a beautifully layered folk composition with  bluesy guitar lines taking the spotlight. The structure remains simple and easy to follow, but this simplicity works to the song’s advantage. Its emotion grows naturally, much like the visual suggested by the title, which represents rivers and roadways in constant motion. Memories appear to flow in and out, producing an honest and deeply melancholy atmosphere.
