Big Space – The Watching

“The Watching” begins with ethereal post-rock guitars wrapped in echo, creating a feeling of “dreamy” nostalgia. The percussion contrasts this with a jazzy approach, moving between odd measures that give unpredictability and complexity to the composition. As the piece evolves, dynamic sections allow the listener to pause and “take pleasure” in the soundscapes before the music becomes more electrified. Despite moments of increased volume, the avant-garde jazz influence remains central, while the guitars have a Robert Fripp-inspired vibe, particularly in their use of unconventional playing and time signatures. Around 2:40, the guitar introduces a drone-metal sound via distortion, which develops into a hypnotic solo that combines free jazz, flamenco, and classic rock elements. This multidimensional instrumental trip encourages attentive listening, revealing a rich structure and sophisticated performances that highlight technical proficiency as well as creative vision. The production of “The Watching” has been carefully orchestrated to highlight each layer of the piece. The broad audio mixing allows the guitars, percussion, and complex sounds to move freely, resulting in a trippy atmosphere that emphasises every detail.
