Jah Wobble & Jon Klein – Fading Away

The collaboration of post-punk legends Jah Wobble (Public Image Ltd.) and Jon Klein (Specimen, Siouxsie & The Banshees) is no coincidence. After originally collaborating on Metal Box – Rebuilt in Dub in 2021, the two artists have kept up to explore common sound and thematic surface. As the band explains, “‘Fading Away’ is an end-of-civilisation story, echoing one of the earliest themes of human literature and reflecting a persistent human anxiety about the fragility of social order.” The song begins with 1980s-inspired synths and bizarre electronic sounds, creating a strange, anxious atmosphere. When the vocals appear, their storytelling value, supported by gentle backing vocals, pushes the song into a dreamy pop context, balancing storytelling content and melodic easy listening. Jah Wobble’s mature, distinct voice provides an interesting creative contrast to the gentle, lush background. The percussion is funky but secured, specifically allowing the vocals to take over the mix. This dreamlike musical style nicely complements the song’s unusual lyrical topics, increasing the feeling of feeling uneasy and calm awareness.
