Flowerland – The Pearmain Recordings
The Pearmain Recordings, originally recorded at the peak of the East Coast alternative music scene, express the raw passion and uncensored passion that marked the time period. John Agnello, who worked with Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., and Screaming Trees to create the 1990s alternative sound, remixed the album, giving Flowerland’s original recordings additional clarity and strength without compromising their power. Mindsnap Music has re-released the album, which is distributed by Von Artists, Ltd (The Orchard/Sony), as a relevant archive artefact. Led by guitarist and remaining band member Steven Christofor, this release is both a rebirth and an honour to the band’s three late members, whose creative energy continues on through these recordings. The album benefits from superb mastering and a well-balanced mix that creates a clean but dynamic sound. The material is completely grounded in grunge, with obvious influences from bands such as Mudhoney and early Alice in Chains, while the guitar work sometimes moves into heavier ground characteristic of Black Sabbath. The heaviness of the distortion sometimes borders on musical chaos, but the mix is precise enough to make the songs cohesive and fascinating. The end result is a trippy, mental listening experience that feels historically significant, providing a true look into how grunge sounded and looked during its early years.
