lowsunday – White EP
The White EP marks the new effort of lowsunday, the project of Shane Sahene (vocals, guitar, synth, bass, drums) and Bobby Spell (bass, guitar, drums). The EP combines darkwave, post-punk, and shoegaze influences to create a dreamy, atmospheric sound that sounds nostalgic and unearthly. From the opening groovy bass rhythms to the ethereal guitar textures, the production maintains an intricate harmony between strength and softness, resulting in songs that are dance-friendly, mysterious, and dramatic. The vocals tend to be hazy and mysterious and occasionally modified using vocoder techniques to provide levels of fascination and emotional distance. The music changes smoothly between dark, gothic moods that remind of Sisters of Mercy and the early 1980s post-punk scene, while slight shoegaze and 4AD-inspired guitar lines add an ethereal, almost hypnotic quality. Retro and DIY production touches throughout the EP contribute to its beauty, creating an impression of warmth and authenticity without compromising quality. These are my favorite tracks:
Nevver – The EP opens with a groovy bass line that recalls1980s post-punk aesthetics, providing a slightly scary element. As the guitar enters, the sound becomes intense, while Shane’s vocals are hazy and mysterious, creating an almost shoegaze-like effect. The track manages to combine dance-friendly grooves with a dark, immersive atmosphere, defining the tone for the EP.
Call Silence – More melodic but equally dark, this track channels a Sisters of Mercy-inspired vibe, with gothic atmosphere through the vocals. The bass and drum patterns create a hypnotic pulse, enhanced by dreamy, deep production, creating a sense of inner beauty.
Lowsunday’s EP combines melancholy, cinematic drama, and hypnotic grooves, creating a sound that is undoubtedly immersive. The White EP defines lowsunday as a project with a distinct voice in the post-punk and darkwave scenes, emphasising mood, atmosphere, and ethereal darkness over traditional song forms.
