Katy’s Wart (Extended Feelm Version) is Ecce Shnak’s debut short film—”feelm,” as the band sarcastically puts it in their own fancy language. The plot revolves around two sisters who often fight but deeply love and understand one another. Their relationship becomes critical as they are hunted by a vicious psychopath, transforming the story into a strange and disturbing symbol. Under its bizarre front, the film can be viewed as a dark satire on the collapse of contemporary American society. A purportedly “good-looking” and wealthy man gets violent, attacking two young women who appear to be more concerned with external appearance than survival. The cartoonish personalities and brutal violence enhance the satire, crossing the line between horror, social criticism, and dark humour. The band’s music appears heavily about 6:25, corresponding to the appearance of an alien monster who arrives to save the sisters. aesthetically, the music takes a dark, doom-inspired approach characteristic of Black Sabbath, with powerful, hypnotic guitar riffs that perfectly match the scene’s savage violence. The vocals have a sardonic touch to it, switching between frightening and ethereal moments throughout the chaotic slaughter between the monster and the “respectable” man. The sharp contrast between crushing heaviness and smooth vocal lines offers the sequence an experimental feel, recalling of Faith No More’s early, challenging music. Overall, Katy’s Wart (Extended Feelm Version) is a risky and strangely intriguing mix of underground cinema and heavy music, using humour, vulgarity, and musical cruelty to make a memorable effect.
