Scissorgun – Scream If You Want To Go Faster

Scissorgun, an electronic trio formed in Manchester in August 2016, consists of Dave Clarkson (synths, rhythms, tapes, percussion), Alan Hempsall (vocals, processed guitar, samples, loops), and Adrian Ball (light show and projections). Hempsall is best known as the former vocalist for Crispy Ambulance, which released albums on Factory Records between 1980 and 1982. He also famously appeared on stage with Joy Division in April 1980, replacing Ian Curtis at a gig in Bury that led to in a riot, a story that reveals his deep roots in post-punk history. “Seven Bells” combines guitar with heavily distorted electronic sounds, resulting in a distorted but addictive puzzle of post-punk, rave, and psychedelia, all wrapped in a cool, DIY production. “Face Deflector” begins with distorted electronic sounds that develop in a groovy but experimental flow; when the vocals show up, the song adopts an early Brian Eno-like style, mixing spoken word with exploratory electronic sound design. “Fever Dream” has a more ambient and dreamy approach, with soft, fading beats characteristic of The Future Sound of London. Its ethereal production focuses on mood rather than structure, drawing the listener into a dreamy electronic world. Overall, Scream If You Want To Go Faster is an experimental electronic record that derives from an eclectic spectrum of inspirations. From echoes of classic-era David Bowie on “Bad As Bingo” to elements of Britpop, post-punk, and rave culture, Scissorgun manages to bring all of these influences together under a distinct electronic umbrella. The end result is a record that feels historically knowledgeable and innovative, avoiding easy categorization while remaining continuously fascinating.
