Nevaris – Ninth Sun – Live
Percussionist AC Nevaris is at the core of a dynamic nine-piece group that includes DJ Logic, Jonathan Maron, Angel Rodriguez, Will Bernard, Peter Apfelbaum, Lockatron, and Matt Dickey in the live studio recording Ninth Sun. The session was designed as a place for collective exploration, free from the limitations of ticket sales and venue logistics, rather than chasing the demands of a regular live event. The session, which was recorded at Bill Laswell’s legendary studio in West Orange, New Jersey, makes full use of the live room’s depth and vibrancy, turning it into an active participant in the song. DJ Logic’s looping textures and mixed Latin percussion create a strong rhythmic basis for the song’s opening. Jimi Hendrix’s space-rock style’s cosmic, exploratory tone is brought to mind by the electric guitar’s distorted phrases that move in and out of the mix. A definite jazz legacy appears as the saxophone enters, although it is filtered through a psychedelic filter, recalling Nik Turner’s free-spirited experimentation rather than conventional swing or bebop forms. SoundSession develops naturally with a sense of storytelling motion, unfolding as a massive, constantly changing jam. A dreamlike flow that is more similar to watching a movie than listening to a conventional song is created by the changes, which feel natural rather than forced. Deep listening is rewarded by this engaging, moving, and relaxing music. Ninth Sun is a colorful and engaging experience for lovers of improvisation, psychedelic soundscapes, and genre-crossing group performance.
