Grumbeaux – Now Is Near

“Now Is Near” was created specifically for the documentary, which follows Tim Z. Hernandez on his lengthy, heartbreaking journey to uncover the tales of the victims of the horrific airplane crash documented in All They Will Call You and They Call You Back. Grumbeaux creates a song that is both frantic and moving, focusing on memory, “departure,” and the challenge of giving names and humanity to forgotten persons. The song begins with punk-influenced guitar parts that express a raw energy. At the same time, there’s a surprising mix of glam-style synth elements, resulting in an odd contrast between roughness and sad glitter. When the vocals enter the mix, they are somewhat broken and trembling, a purposeful choice that adds significance – as if the voice is struggling through time’s static to deliver its message. Grumbeaux moves between slower, peaceful parts and faster riffs throughout the song. A violin appears almost like a song of sorrow, providing an ethereal elegance that contrasts with the distorted guitars. The production is low-fi but character-rich, contributing to the documentary-like vibe of humanity, and honesty.
