Koyot – Space Cadet / The Count
Koyot’s “Space Cadet / The Count” is a modern tribute to the era of psychedelic and space rock, a fascinating two-part trip via sound. “Space Cadet,” the first song, features atmospheric synths and deep, electric bass rhythms that go back to Pink Floyd’s early days. The sluggish, enigmatic tempo allows the sounds to explode and takes the listener to a hazy audio world. With warm analog overtones that faithfully capture a production aesthetic from the 1970s, the mastering is outstanding. A surreal, drifting atmosphere that is nostalgic and engaging is produced by smart use of panning effects. Around three minutes in, the change to “The Count” brings about a minor change in tone, with indie rock elements coming into action as the bass and atmospheric layers maintain the space rock structure. The psychedelic element is still present, but the second half takes on a more structured, songlike style with the introduction of vocals. The Jimi Hendrix-inspired guitar solo, which screams above the mix with raw, dramatic energy, is a very special moment. The vocals give the song a modern edge because they fall midway between post-punk and indie rock. Everything being taken into account Space Cadet / The Count is a beautifully composed double track that combines elements of modern psych-rock hymn with cosmic exploration.
