Octavian Winters – Hermine

Octavian Winters creates a music that beautifully combines post-punk mood, gothic sophistication, and intellectual inspiration. According to vocalist Ria Aursjoen, the lyrics are inspired by Hermann Hesse’s Steppenwolf, focusing on the divided psyche while passionately fighting for the freedom of self-acceptance. From the beginning, the music surrounds the listener in a colorful audio dimension. The reverbed guitars, representative of Sisters of Mercy and Fields of the Nephilim, lay the basis for a sad sound, which is reinforced by a t warm production with clear mastering and audio mix. This musical core provides the ideal soundtrack for Aursjoen’s voice, which arrives with drive and elegance. Her performance reminds us of Cristina Scabbia, with a slight gothic metal touch that lifts the track despite its darkwave roots. Hermine grows like a flower through the song, switching between themes of mystery, nostalgia, and calm playfulness. There’s a sweetness hiding beneath its shadows, a reminder that gothic music doesn’t have to be sad; it can also be beautiful and spiritual. The lyrics, which repeat the name “Hermine” like a prayer, represent both ritualistic heaviness and personal affection. Phrases like “Letters glimmer, shine / On the Magic Sign” and the German invocations of “Im Zaubertheater” add to the track’s mystery, recalling the weird dreamscapes of Hesse’s novel while setting it in its own universe. It’s a track that feels eternal, deserving of repetition and exploration.
