Fini Tribe – We’re Interested

Fini Tribe’s “We’re Interested” is an outstanding representation of Scotland’s booming post-punk underground, celebrated in the retrospective The Sheer Action of Fini Tribe: 1982-1987. Written at a time when the band began to develop their own unique character, the single feels as much like a portrait of Edinburgh as it does a song: dark canals, underground rehearsal rooms, and secret passageways are all repeated in both the music and the lyrics. This version, recorded at BBC Maida Vale studios for a John Peel session and produced by Dale Griffin of Mott the Hoople, is full of young excitement and adventurous drive. Musically, the tune begins with piano, emphasizing normality before changing into post-punk riffs and reverb-heavy guitars. The vocals illustrate the Smiths’ melodic melancholy, while the guitar tone recalls The Clash’s restless, nostalgic spirit.
