Greg Amici – Tragicomic
Greg Amici’s Tragicomic is a diverse album that crosses the emotional line between sarcasm and sincerity, combining smart songwriting with a variety of classic-inspired rock sounds. The album opens with the bass-driven “Pumpkin Man,” defining the mood with its mix of 1990s alternative and 1980s college rock jangle, placing Amici in a group of serious, guitar-based songwriters. “Spin That Ball” continues in the same musical area. Melodic guitar work accompanies Amici’s strong vocal performance, offering the song a nostalgic but dynamic atmosphere. Then comes a surprise: “Cynthia, Come to Me” begins with weird synths and eventually develops into a funk-rock piece filled with alt-rock strength, providing a dynamic touch to the album’s vital rock character. Tracks such as “Girl Next Door” and “Remedy” seem to have a more stripped-down folk sound, relying mainly on acoustic guitar. However, these songs soon develop into stronger, classic rock compositions, revealing Amici’s love of old rock storytelling. The highlight track is “Junky Eyes,” a dreamy, acoustically driven track that moves between folk and psych-rock vibes. The appearance of a beautifully placed saxophone raises the song to almost cinematic level. It’s psychedelic, dedicated, and possibly the album’s peak. The rest of Tragicomic pushes deeper into recognizable classic rock space, drawing inspiration from the biggest names such as Tom Petty and Neil Young. Overall, Tragicomic is a diverse but strong album. It combines alternative rock, folk, and classic American rock, with a spiritual lyrical tone and stylistic variety that motivates listening.
