Gear – Specchi neri
Gear’s “Specchi Neri” opens with raw heavy metal anger, featuring screaming guitar solos and an explosive rhythm section that takes the listener into classic metal land. While the audio mix could benefit from a little more clarity, especially in splitting the instruments, the rawness adds a certain attraction, memorable of early DIY metal records. When the Italian vocals show up, the song takes on a more individual character. The singer’s performance creates a passion that at times recalls Steve Sylvester’s (Death SS) theatrical enthusiasm. The choice to sing in Italian takes nothing away from the experience; rather, it adds authenticity and personality, making the music stand out in the global heavy metal scene. Gear has obvious inspirations, particularly from the early NWOBHM era. Fans of bands such as Angel Witch will like the dramatic changes, retro tones, and combination of melody and force. Despite its drawbacks, “Specchi Neri” carries an explosive energy that cannot be ignored: nostalgic, and shamelessly heavy.
