Strompolos – Fall
Strompolos’ creepy piano-driven ballad “Fall” is filled with gothic elements and strong emotions. A mature voice that recalls Peter Hammill’s raw inner realism leads the track, which is built on minimal but powerful instruments. The singing style leads the listener through a dark inner scene of metamorphosis and rebirth by achieving a balance between softness and control. Like a whispered prayer, the chorus “Close your eyes…” continues, encouraging the listener to fall metaphorically, and possibly literally, into the unknown. The song references ideas of death, rebirth, and spiritual crisis at these points, giving it its strongest meaning. In his lyrics, Strompolos creates a tale full of philosophical thinking and artistic sorrow. Both cosmic melancholy and an element of hope can be detected in lines like “Weaponize the time you lost, and rise up from your grave” and “Falling is flying, it’s just the other way.” The representation of nets, devils, and graves represents a painful self-journey with no guarantee of salvation,only the need for change, and there is an inner play at work. Musically, the music has a chamber-noir vibe thanks to the ambient sounds and minimal piano arrangements, which allow space and stillness to express just as much emotion as the melodies. This cathartic, and elegantly unresolved anticipation to the final repeated “Fall” is interesting. Listening to “Fall” is difficult, and it shouldn’t be. With its cruel simplicity and poetic lyricism, it is a work that provides psychological discovery.
