Mike Smalle, Cathal Coughlan & Jah Wobble – BYOHammer Presents ‘Old Oak Road’
The dark compilation My Grief on the Sea features the track Old Oak Road, which is an excellent mix of historical narration and poetic musical storytelling. This piece, created by the collaborative excellence of Mike Smalle, Cathal Coughlan, and legendary bassist Jah Wobble, converts a difficult 1881 statement, given by an Irish woman in New York, suspected of infanticide, into a melancholic, atmospheric trip through sorrow, memory, and feeling guilty. Musically, Old Oak Road begins slowly, with a melancholy rock soundtrack that recalls Pink Floyd’s more peaceful periods. The musical arrangement is minimal but strong; every note is intentional. Jah Wobble’s bass doesn’t just back the song; it interprets it, guiding the listener through the landscape of feelings like a dark partner to the forthcoming tragedy. The vocal interplay is the emotional center of the song. The soft and fragile duet adds a painful awareness to the song’s storytelling, making it more of a discussion between two ghosts of history than a performance. The mood is heavy and engaging, triggering the cinematic quality of the band Archive, where post-rock sounds meet whispered sorrow. Nonetheless, Old Oak Road has its distinct personality, based in historical sorrow but enhanced by modern creativity. Bring Your Own Hammer is not a band, a group, an ensemble or even a collective. If anything, it is a faction but unlike nineteenth-century factions, who met, armed with sticks and wattles in fairs and markets, it is armed with voices and instruments and dedicated, as no faction before, to the re-interpretation of historical material in song form.
