Ecce Shnak – Backroom Sessions EP
Ecce Shnak’s Backroom Sessions EP is a strong live EP which documents the band in its most raw and uncensored state. This four-song set, recorded at Backroom Studios in Rockaway, New Jersey, is an exciting combination of hardcore punk, progressive rock, and avant-garde theatrics. Rather than smoothing edges, the lo-fi production emphasizes the music’s rebellious character, taking the listener into the rehearsal room alongside the band. Backroom Sessions stands out not only for its obvious energy, but also for its daring synthesis of various styles. Ecce Shnak combines the brutality of early hardcore with Frank Zappa’s creative unpredictably and the experimental structures of bands such as King Crimson and Gong. The end result is an EP that is both rebellious and intelligent, anarchic and meaningful. Vocals range from screamed punk-inspired tirades to melodic duets and experimental parts, with lyrics expressing irony, anxiety, and art-rock surreality. Beneath this, the musicianship is rapid tight, and frequently surprisingly sophisticated, particularly in complex basslines and changing time signatures. Each song feels like it could go off the rails, but it never does; the band manages the pandemonium with grace. Ecce Shnak takes the listener to a world where punk and prog, wrath and humor, clash with strong creativity.
