Duncan Lloyd – Rituals
Duncan Lloyd, well-known as the guitarist of art-rock pioneers Maxïmo Park, wrote the mentally powerful indie track “Rituals” that deals with the duality of habits, both helpful and harmful. The song begins with a faded-in guitar, creating a nostalgic atmosphere. Its semi-acoustic/semielectric style takes the listener to an isolated world. There’s an air of sensitivity here, typical of the psychological awareness that characterized early indie rock, with production that makes it sound like it’s flying in from distant memories, broken radios, as Lloyd describes them, with only one breaking through the static with precision. Musically, “Rituals” relies on a hypnotic chord sequence that backs up a changing rhythmical progression. It’s a clever design: peaceful and flexible, but softly dynamic. The chorus evolves into a dream-pop haze, offering warmth and a sense of boost. Elements of The Beach Boys’ harmonics combine with The Lightning Seeds’ carefree melancholy, providing the track a sophisticated Britpop style while maintaining its roots in indie rock. Lyrically, the song addresses themes of kindness, and the attempt to pull someone out of a difficult circumstance, all presented with smooth honesty. Overall, “Rituals” is a gentle, philosophical composition that’s both musically attractive as well as mentally cathartic.
