Bärnserker – Schmärz
“Schmärz” begins like a ritual, with strong distortion, crawling speeds, and sad vocals characteristic of the early 1990s doom-death metal movement. Bärnserker’s audio sounds remind one of My Dying Bride or Ancient, with an atmospheric black metal touch that puts the listener in a dark, melancholic atmosphere. The track stands out for its unexpected folk vibe. Beneath the “dying” wall of sound is a small melody line offering a moment of contrast, a memory hidden in the noise. This folk element does not reduce the metal impact, but rather enhances the melancholy, like a lonely echo of something gone. As the song continues, the tempo builds up, particularly on the drums, delivering a more groovy but driving energy. At 2:43, the guitar riffs become more brutal, almost ritualistic, triggering Rotting Christ and the unique character of Hellenic black metal. It’s a standout moment, combining raw fury with a macabre feeling of harmony. Before the end, Bärnserker retracts his claws, synths take control, creating a more ethereal atmosphere. However, this is only a temporary retreat. The music returns to its doom-death roots, completing the ritual in the same way it began: slow; crushing, and filled with an endless pain. “Schmärz” is more than simply a song; it’s an adventure through several metal and mental realms, funeral, folkloric, and feral.
