“No Fool” begins with a nostalgic guitar line that recalls the spirit of historic rock legends such as Tom Petty and Neil Young. It’s a perfect beginning to a single that’s as much about aging with attitude as it is about writing a strong song. The production is simple and humble, serving rather than overshadowing the song, which is a pleasant option that allows the vocals and lyrics to stand out. Amici’s approach emphasizes authenticity. He doesn’t put on a show; he is the show. His vocal performance has a worn-in style that matches the subject matter: a self-critical story about an older guy locked up in a fantasy of romance and meaning, presented with humor, personality, and a good sense of the bizarre. The chorus has exactly the appropriate bite: “There’s no fool / Like an old fool / I’m here for trouble — can you tell me the rules?” It’s catchy, interesting, and crosses the border between humor and melancholy. While he acknowledges that only the classroom anecdote is true, the song’s voice is authentic and reliable, even down to the last sad punchline: “Too late to send me to obedience school.” “No Fool” is more than just an interesting song.
