Joe Firedream – Five months
Joe Firedream’s “Five Months” is a raw, deeply moving piece that seeks to “capture the psychological strain of a complicated relationship that is stuck between desire and disconnection” and it does so. The song begins with a dark bassline before moving fast into pop-punk category. Emo vocals take center stage, leading to an enthusiastic performance that is both sensitive and cathartic. The guitar work has a definite post-punk edge, with minor darkwave elements giving an obscure depth to the otherwise cheerful performance. The sound has a pop approach, placing the vocals first and producing an unexpectedly happy vibe despite the sad subject matter. It’s an interesting contrast that increases the song’s conflict between hope and sadness. While the overall mix is great, the audio might use some improving in the mastering step. Nonetheless, the original material is strong, and these improvements would be fairly easy to apply. “Five Months” is a promising and expressive release from Joe Firedream, combining pop-punk electricity, post-punk forms, and tenderness in a way that communicates musically.
