The Awakening – Haunting
The Awakening, lead by Ashton Nyte, offers a scary but exciting experience with Haunting. The Awakening, founded in Johannesburg in the late 1990s and currently headquartered in the United States, continues to explore the essence of traditional gothic rock, combining dark atmospheres with groovy energy. The tune achieves a melancholic mood right away, with an interesting fight between guitar and bass, both “trapped” in a dark embrace. A continuous, driving drumbeat runs beneath, creating a rhythm that is both strong and seductive. The raw, dark vocals recall the haunting shadows of Bauhaus and The Sisters of Mercy, giving the music a frightening, fever dream quality. There is an obvious sense of anxiety, a dance between terror and attraction, with the creepy presence in the words mirroring the track’s musical atmosphere. At 2:25, the intensity drops, allowing for a short, more peaceful section – an alarming stillness before the storm. This little break just increases the anticipation of the dangerous guitar and bass returning with fresh energy, pulling the listener back into the track’s dark control. Lyrically, Haunting is a haunting dance through sorrow, memory, and the persistent presence of something—or someone—just out of reach. The song’s imagery of burning candles, whispered names, and ethereal shadows creates a world in which the past never truly fades away. The chorus “Haunting me again” becomes a repetition, looping throughout the song like a restless soul unwilling to rest.
