The Shadow Majlis – Mazdur

2 min read

“Mazdur” by The Shadow Majlis is a psych musical journey that smartly blends elements of cinematic grandeur, post-punk mysticism, and folk influences into a spellbinding composition. From the bombastic introduction reminiscent of adventure movie soundtracks to the intricate layering of instruments, this track offers a rich and immersive experience from start to finish. The percussion sets an epic and heroic rhythm right from the start, complemented by the rhythmic acoustic guitar that adds a touch of Latin flair. As the song progresses, the addition of dark melodic tones from the electric guitar and the haunting vocals of Ali Jafri further enhance the mystical atmosphere of the track. While there are hints of symphonic and progressive rock elements, the track primarily maintains a mystical post-punk vibe reminiscent of bands like The Cure and Dead Can Dance. The incorporation of folk influences, particularly through the strings, adds another layer of depth to the composition. One of the highlights of the track is the solo section around the 4:50 mark, where the guitarist delivers soundscapes reminiscent of Robert Fripp, accompanied by increasingly complex percussion that even adopts a jazzy character. The lyrics, penned by Ali Jafri, add another layer of intrigue to the song, exploring themes of longing, mystery, and the ephemeral nature of dreams. Jafri’s vocals, accompanied by the ethereal synthesizers and programming, evoke a sense of otherworldly enchantment. Overall, “Mazdur” invites listeners on a dark journey through its cinematic grandeur, post-punk mysticism, and folk influences.
