The Veldt – Illuminated 1989

2 min read

The Veldt’s “Illuminated 1989” album, produced by the legendary Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins fame, stands as a nostalgic trip to the early days of shoegaze. Released as the original 1989 full-length record and later remastered for vinyl by Guthrie himself, this album offers an exploration of the sound that defined a genre. Formed in North Carolina during the 1980s, The Veldt, led by identical twins Daniel and Danny Chavis, played a pivotal role in the first wave of shoegaze. “Illuminated 1989” was initially intended to be the band’s debut album, but Capitol Records shelved the recording. The album’s tracklist is a journey through dreamy melodies, lush reverberations, and subtle folk elements. The remastered sound retains the original quality of rawness and amateurism that characterized the early days of iconic bands. The influence of bands like Lush and, notably, Cocteau Twins is evident throughout the album, with dreamy guitars and post-punk vocal performances blending to create a unique atmosphere infused with a raw meta-punk attitude. Standout tracks like “Pleasure Toy” (my favorite track) showcase The Veldt’s ability to create a sonic experience that transcends traditional shoegaze boundaries. The characteristic bass lines and psychedelic vocals add depth to the song, at times reminiscent of a speedier version of Pink Floyd. The atmospheric elements in the middle of the track, coupled with the return to a post-punk crescendo, contribute to its allure. The inclusion of additional vocals by Elizabeth Fraser and the collaborative efforts of Lincoln Fong and Robin Guthrie in programming and guitar work further elevate the album’s sonic landscape. The dreamy, ethereal quality of the album intertwines seamlessly with its raw and unpolished nature, creating a nostalgic yet timeless listening experience. “Illuminated 1989” serves as a valuable artifact in the evolution of shoegaze, offering a glimpse into the genre’s formative years. The Veldt’s ability to blend atmospheric elements with post-punk sensibilities makes this album a must-listen for fans of the genre and those intrigued by the soundscapes that defined alternative music in the late 1980s. “Illuminated 1989” remains a vital piece of shoegaze history, not only for its sonic aesthetics but also for its role in capturing the essence of a band at the cusp of their creative journey. The blend of dreamy melodies, raw energy, and experimental nuances makes this album a timeless gem.
