2 min read

The collaborative venture between Moineau, the alter ego of Benjamin Sperling from Jännerwein, and Westwind, represented by Kris G, yields a cool 7″ vinyl titled “Hej Sokoly / Zasvit Vstaly Kozachenky.” Rooted in Ukrainian folk traditions, this release offers a captivating fusion of acoustic folk and cinematic music, presenting both timeless melodies and a contemporary resonance. The journey begins with Moineau’s rendition of “Гей, соколи” (“Hey, falcons”), a Ukrainian folk song with roots in a 19th-century Polish version. Benjamin Sperling’s delicate touch brings out the emotional depth of the acoustic folk track. The lyrics, delivered in a soul-stirring manner, narrate the tale of a young Cossack parting ways with his love and his beloved Ukraine. The melancholic beauty of the composition is underscored by the lyrics, painting a vivid picture of love, loss, and a yearning for homeland. The acoustic arrangement allows the listener to immerse themselves in the raw and heartfelt expression of this timeless narrative. On the flip side, Westwind takes the stage with “Zasvit Vstaly Kozachenky,” a powerful and cinematic composition that transcends the boundaries of traditional folk music. Kris G’s interpretation of a traditional Ukrainian song is nothing short of epic, with impressive percussion, dramatic synth, and vocals enhanced by suitable effects. The song unfolds like a cinematic masterpiece, evoking a sense of urgency and resistance. Sung in Ukrainian, the lyrics address the contemporary issue of war in Ukraine, delivering a bold anti-war political message. The marriage of traditional themes with modern sonic elements creates a striking contrast that elevates the track to new heights.

Both Moineau and Westwind, having returned from the Die Weisse Rose concerts in Lviv and Kyiv, infuse this vinyl release with a deep connection to the cultural and historical context of Ukraine. The juxtaposition of the nostalgic folk piece and the modern cinematic composition serves as a poignant commentary on the enduring spirit of a nation grappling with both tradition and contemporary challenges. “Hej Sokoly / Zasvit Vstaly Kozachenky” stands as a testament to the power of music to transcend time, providing solace, reflection, and a rallying cry for those who find themselves caught between the echoes of the past and the realities of the present.
