Karamelien – Living With The Moon

2 min read

“Living With The Moon” by Karamelien, the musical collaboration of singer-songwriter Léanie Kaleido and guitarist Mark Foster, brings a fresh and distinctive sound to the East Grinstead music scene. The album, comprising 8 tracks and a reprise, showcases the artistic synergy between these long-time friends, whose musical journey together has deepened their connection. One of the notable features of the album is the ethereal romance that permeates each track, largely attributed to Léanie Kaleido’s beautiful and playful voice. Drawing inspiration from artists like Nelly Furtado and Dolores O’Riordan, Kaleido infuses each song with a unique vocal charm that adds a layer of warmth and emotion to the overall musical experience. Mark Foster’s musical preferences lean towards a harder edge, evident in the album’s guitar work. Foster’s desire for “pretty processed” and “a little bit ugly” guitar sounds, influenced by the spirit of Sonic Youth and J Mascis, adds a distinctive character to some of the tracks. The edgier guitar tones contribute to the album’s diversity, offering listeners a range of sonic experiences. While some tracks feature an edgier guitar sound, the overall production maintains an indie pop and folk aesthetic. Foster’s comments on wanting the guitars to sound a bit “ugly” add a layer of complexity to the album’s sonic palette. The juxtaposition of Kaleido’s pop-inspired vocals with Foster’s edgier guitar elements creates a unique balance that sets Karamelien apart. The album’s mix of different musical styles within the indie pop and folk production might challenge traditional genre boundaries. There’s a suggestion that a different mix could enhance the rock attitude of the album, providing a new perspective for listeners. However, the current production, guided by the vision of the producer, allows each song to maintain its individuality while still fitting into the cohesive narrative of “Living With The Moon.” The album, with its ethereal romance, edgy guitar work, and genre-blurring production, offers a unique listening experience that showcases the dynamic partnership between Léanie Kaleido and Mark Foster.
