Rocket Kings – Paving The Way
“Paving The Way” by Rocket Kings is a delightful indie rock album that embodies the essence of musical craftsmanship and heartfelt storytelling. Formed in 2016, this five-piece ensemble, led by Dave Stewart, Bex Crossland, David Heath, Jess Tuthill, and Yoshiko Nakayama, takes inspiration from bands like The Beautiful South, The Cranberries, and Belle and Sebastian to create a sonic journey that is both nostalgic and fresh. Throughout “Paving The Way,” Rocket Kings showcase their musical versatility, weaving together elements of indie rock, pop, and folk to create a captivating and cohesive collection of songs. One of the standout tracks on the album is “Dream Undream,” a melodic pop gem that showcases Rocket Kings’ songwriting prowess. The lyrics of “Dream Undream” paint vivid imagery of longing and nostalgia, as they explore the idea of buildings and landmarks being taken away from the public eye, leaving only distant memories and a sense of loss. The chorus, with its repeated plea, “No one can interpret a dream,” adds a layer of introspection and mystery to the song. Musically, “Dream Undream” is a shining example of Rocket Kings’ ability to craft catchy and emotionally resonant melodies. The ukulele-driven instrumentation, combined with Bex Crossland’s and Jess Tuthill’s captivating vocals, creates an atmosphere of bittersweet beauty. The song’s bridge, with its rhythmic repetition and evocative lyrics, adds depth and emotional weight to the track. “Paving The Way” as a whole is a thoroughly enjoyable and well-crafted indie rock experience. Rocket Kings have not only paid homage to their influences but have also carved out their own unique niche in the genre.
