Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys – Howl

1 min read

South African-born musician Lucy Kruger, who resides in Berlin, is the frontwoman of this art pop noise project. From Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boy’s forthcoming album, Heaving, Howl is the band’s most recent single, which will be available on March 16, 2023.

It’s an experimental rock song that effortlessly transitions from casual storytelling to a visceral, borderline violent confession. The transition from emotional vocal lines to aggressive screams and vice versa, creates a rollercoaster of feelings for the listener and leads him or her to an almost unhuman experience, both defiant and tragic. This is a kind of personal confession or catharsis where female voice is the main musical instrument and Alternative Rock serves as a soundtrack to the catharsis.

Musically, it is hard to categorise this song because it includes a diversity of musical influences, from Hole to Marilyn Manson, Garbage, and beyond. However, on a mood level, I would describe it as a noisy journey between love and anger. Howl uses the voice not only to create words but also as a means of expression—an animalistic take on autobiography. Pulses that attempt to entice the body into feeling are interspersed with strange noises and private passages from stories. This is a very strange listening experience, but I am sure that the result is tempting and exciting.
