Govey/Matthew – Justice (Track review)

2 min read

The short introduction of the track pays tribute to a movie with prisons and criminals, a fact that places you instantly into the song as a character, a type of role-playing game. As the intro fades out and the music fades in, the Queensryche (Operation Mindcrime era) and Pink Floyd (The Division Bell era) influences are quite obvious, especially with the slow guitar and the back vocal lines. The singer begins the storytelling and discusses the theme of justice; “Where is the justice?” is the main question in this track. Although the lyrics look like a scene from a movie, according to the composer, the song is inspired by a personal breakup in 1996. In this perspective, I guess that the composer refers to the emotional prison rather than the common brick-and-mortal prison. The slow part of the music continues until 04:02, where it comes to the first peak of the song and the outbreak of the singer, who raises the volume of his voice and ends up in an expressive scream as a result of his emotional disappointment: “Where is the justice?” The same question follows him on his personal journey of self-discovery. Overall, the track is based on an interesting concept, and the orchestration includes an easy-to-follow flow. The only weak point of this track is the production because the drums and the guitars sound a bit artificial, but I think this could be easily improved with a number of improvements in the audio mix and mastering.
