Sony Threatens to Sue Twitter for Disseminating Stolen Information

In my last post on the Sony “hack” I called the leaked information a “non-stop fountain of information”. Many people expressed outrage in the comments over this choice of words… FYI: A “fountain of information” and stolen data/a foreign attack aren’t mutually exclusive. Also, every company should probably password-protect their files and encrypt data. I won’t even get into the part where company executives used their work email to make racist and unprofessional comments about the people they do business with.

Leaking personal, financial, and healthcare details of employees is an awful (and illegal) thing to do. As far as everything else that was leaked, it’s hard to feel bad for Sony as a corporation.

Now, a letter obtained by Motherboard reveals that Sony has threatened to sue Twitter for “disseminating stolen information”.

Sony contacted Twitter because the account “@bikinrobotarmy” has been posting screenshots of leaked Sony emails. Sony’s lawyer David Boies asked Twitter to pass the letter on to the infringing account, which Twitter did.

Twitter hasn’t given an official response, but say they don’t allow tweets that contain private information about others. However, tweets containing links to sites that contain private information do not violate Twitter’s rules.

Sony’s letter isn’t an official DMCA takedown request, it’s just a threat… for now.
