Bob Dylan’s 30th anniversary concert gets its first release

3 min read

Bob Dylan: The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration includes performances by Lou Reed, Neil Young, George Harrison and Johnny Cash plus unseen rehearsal footage and new interviews. In 1992, Columbia Records threw Bob Dylan an almighty 30th anniversary concert, inviting artists such as Lou Reed, Neil Young, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Johnny Cash, the Band, Pearl Jam, Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder and Willie Nelson to share the stage with the singer. On 4 March, the performance, originally broadcast on pay-per-view, gets its first release on CD, DVD and Blu-ray.

According to Rolling Stone, Bob Dylan: The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration – Deluxe Edition will include Dylan’s solo acoustic rendition of Girl From the North Country, Neil Young’s Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues, with Booker T and the MGs, and George Harrison’s Absolutely Sweet Marie, which was his final public performance. The deluxe edition also features rehearsal footage of Sinéad O’Connor, who was supposed to perform Dylan’s gospel classic I Believe in You at the event but was booed off the stage following her controversial Saturday Night Live appearance when the singer ripped up a photo of the Pope.

“That gig was one of the highlights of my career,” guitarist GE Smith and the musical director of the show says. “There aren’t a lot of people that can attract a lineup like that, and everyone was on their best behavior. Lou Reed and Neil Young can be prickly, but not in the three days we were prepping that show. I also got to talk to Johnny Cash. What’s cooler than that?”
