Kiss to be inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014

2 min read

Kiss, Nirvana, Peter Gabriel, Hall & Oates, Linda Ronstadt, Cat Stevens and the E Street Band will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 10 April at Brooklyn’s Barclays Centre. In October, it was announced that half of this year’s shortlist were first-time nominees: Nirvana, Ronstadt, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, the Replacements, Yes, the late Link Wray, and the Zombies. However, only four of these made the final list. Artists are eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record, meaning that Nirvana, who released Bleach in 1989, have been nominated at the first possible opportunity.

Kiss reportedly gained the most fan votes, which was included as an additional ballot with 700 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. After many years of being nominated, the rock band made the final list with 17.2% of approximately 1.4m votes cast. Fifteen years after Bruce Springsteen’s induction, the E Street Band will receive the award for music excellence. Meanwhile, the late Beatles manager Brian Epstein and Rolling Stones manager and producer Andrew Loog Oldham will be given Ahmet Ertegün awards for non-performers. Peter Gabriel, 63, was inducted with his prog rock band Genesis in 2010 and will receive the honour as a solo performer next year. There were disappointments, however. The group Chic have been nominated eight times since 2003, but were still out of fashion with voters – despite a rise in their popularity in 2013.

The 29th induction ceremony will be televised on HBO in May.
