Metallica are to perform their classic Black Album in its entirety to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Download festival next year.
Download 2012 takes place at Donington Park from June 8 to 10 and has secured a UK exclusive from Metallica, who will headline on Saturday June 9.
Live Nation VP of promotion Andy Copping said he was delighted that the band would be playing the album at the 10th anniversary of Download, which started in 2003 with headliners Iron Maiden and Audioslave
“The album is up there as one of the greatest albums of all time, everyone knows the songs,” he added. “The Download festival has come a long way since we first started in 2003 and to have Metallica back to help us celebrate this milestone is just fantastic.”
The “Black Album” – actually called Metallica – was the band’s fifth studio album. It has sold more than 22 million copies globally and spawned hit singles such as Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters
Metallic drummer Lars Ulrich said he was pleased to be returning to the festival, which the band last played in 2006.
“We are beyond psyched and feel privileged to come back once again to soak up the energy and vibe of the most legendary of festival sites,” he said.
Tickets go on sale next Friday (November 18).
