Ulver Live Report From Athens

Ulver seems to be very famous in Greece, the club was full and there were fans from all the music genres that the band has been related to, all these years: Black metal, post rock, electronica, tri – hop, etc. There was also a screen behind the band  that was showing video art to capture the meaning behind Ulver’s lyrics. Of course most of the images had a poetic and dark atmosphere, it was an experience of being in the center of human’s mind and watching all the events from inside..

The band’s sound could be described as post rock but of course this is a “poor” term to describe the general idea behind the music. When you have a DJ that experiments with the music, a a guitar player, laptops, a real drumer and a singer then it’s obvious that this team is ready to create some interesting atmospheric sounds that are narcotic, melodic, sad  and  deeply meaningful for all the people that came that night in Gagarin. People received the the bands energy with enthusiasism and were waiting to hear the experimental sound of Ulver. The noises and the effects according to the dark side of technology  were the main weapons of the band and sure all the fans really knew what to expect. After 50 minutes of atmospheric experimentation, the music trip faded out as the band waved goodbye….but with a small promise..”We’ll be back in 20 minutes “

People were dissapointed that the show lasted only for less than an hour but they were curious to find out what was the band’s intention afterwards..Something was going to happen..We saw more musicians on stage, and more electric instruments coming up. Then, the mystery solved as the band had something special for the Greek fans that follow the band from the early Black metal stuff of their first era. Could you believe it or not? Especially for Greece, they played one song from the first album of the band, an album that was pure Black Metal ! People from the audience went crazy as they couldn’t believe in their eyes and ears.. After 50 minutes of minimalistic post rock, a storm of distorted guitar entered the world of Black metal. The first song from thier first album was played only for those fans that were lucky enough to stay till the end of the concert! This was the best finale for this concert.. Sure if the band could stay on stage for more time then we would be 100% satisfied from this concert experience cause 1 hour is not enough for the fans to entertain their mind needs..
