OUR AFTER…Modern Rock Masterpiece !

Interview with John Phillips
 

1. Who are Our After and what’s the secret behind the band’s name ?

The band members are John Phillips, Steven Husted, Michael Dudley, Aaron Bruch, Eli Hludizk. The bands name originated from us actually talking about our first album ‘Perfect Day”. We were recording the album before we ever played a show, and we didn’t even have a band name at that point. We basically said that the album was taking us “hour after hour” to record and then our bass player at the time we should call the band OurAfter and just take the H out of it. That is literally it. No big story, no big special meaning. We were just looking to be clever. lol

2. Your music is trip into ambient and rock melodies. How easy or hard is to place your self in this music genres during the time of composing and recording?

This album that we just recorded was much more angry than the first one. “Perfect Day” was a very melancholy or moody album. “Tabula Rasa” dealt with some very angry personal experiences that I needed to unleash. It was time to get this on the plate and we had a great approach to what we wanted to do. It was very easy to put ourselves in the songs and know how we wanted to approach it with the proper amount of drive and angst.

3.Would you like to talk us more about your latest CD release?

It has been a process to say the least. We are an independent band so it is always a constant struggle to keep on top of things and make money. 

4.What’s the band’s statement in political and music level with their sound and lyrics ?

Politics to us are variable dealing with OurAfter. Everyone has their opinions on the way we view things, but the biggest thing we have is tolerance for one another. There needs to be more of that in the world. 

5.How is the tour going till now?

Our shows have been fantastic recently. We keep picking up more and more steam and we are thrilled that people are responding the way they area.

6. Are there any plans for any video shooting ?

We have been in talks with a video producer and there is interest in shooting a video for “Push the Pill”. That is the main song that people seem to gravitate towards on the record.

7. Do you think that internet works in a positive level as a promotional tool for you?

Absolutely. OurAfter has been heavy on Internet Promotion since day one. It has garnered many fans for us and we are ecstatic that we have met so many great people all over the world, including yourself.

8. Ho do you think that latest economic crisis have influenced music business and what’s your “escape plan” ?

I think the crisis has done nothing to influence. I personally think that most bands lack character these days in the genre that we are in. Record companies are idiots for signing the same sound over and over again. They are looking for a quick fix which is like putting a band-aid over a knife wound. The industry is constantly looking for ways to get money and the bands are selling out too much these days. I admire bands like Radiohead, Chevelle, Pearl Jam, and Tool for being unique and not ever being taken advantage of.

9. How do you criticize the status of music television today and let us know if it’s helpful for newcomers.

I think there is no status for Music TV in America today. It has been gobbled up Reality shows and turned the average everyday person into a VOYEUR. All of society is voyeuristic anymore. We all want to be sucked into other people’s lives to the point where we don’t care about our own. Music Television died years ago. I personally think they should bring it back to what is was. who cares if ratings weren’t as big. At least it made people think.

10. What’s your next move in personal & music level?

Time to head back the studio and drawing board and start recording again! New albums and product is always a good thing,.
