Charnel Crown – Such is Life
Charnel Crown, an Irish groove metal band, shows their aggressive personality straight away with “Such Is Life.” The song begins with screaming vocals before moving to a powerful groove-hardcore base that combines the physical impact of hardcore with a heavier metal approach. The vocal performance is loud and commanding, recalling the brutality of Sepultura while still connecting the music to the present metalcore genre. The lyrics discuss the consequences of our acts and the point at which there is no going back. This concept flows nicely with the music, since the constant riffs give the feeling that someone is being pushed ahead by the effects of their own actions. The groove is very successful, giving the song a powerful headbanging vibe while maintaining its energy. There are also obvious death-metal elements in the arrangement, which adds another depth of “evil” to the already crushing sound. The guitar work is one of the track’s greatest points, with unique riffs and harder moments that sometimes mirror Cannibal Corpse’s direct and brutal style. Rather than depending only on speed, Charnel Crown understands the potential of a slower, strongly locked groove, which allows the guitars and drums to respond with significant power. “Such Is Life” finally mixes groove metal, hardcore, metalcore, and death-metal influences to create a savage piece that is modern and deeply rooted in extreme metal.
