Max Rael – Brighter Future
Max Rael’s Brighter Future is a work of cinematic electronica that combines spoken word philosophy, ambient soundscapes, and “prophetic” groove. The music begins with beautiful synth pads and creates a peaceful, ethereal mood—one that feels stuck between optimism and fear. As the beat comes in with minimum effect, a beautiful violin note turns through the mix, producing a feeling of cinematic scale that is sensitive. Vocals arrive with strong spoken word rather than melody, presented in a mindful tone characteristic of Laurie Anderson’s narrative technique or Gil Scott-Heron’s inner tempo. Rael does not sing; he questions. His lyrics are broad with philosophical and psychological knowledge, addressing the pointlessness of avoidance, the hollow nature of forced positivism, and the tempting traps of in-the-moment escape. Lines like “Realists are just pessimists with added confirmation bias” and “the blankness of soulless mindfulness” are more than just judgment; they are stern calls for revival from inner apathy. What’s remarkable is how Rael contrasts this lyrical seriousness with a groove that emerges slowly below. Acid synth lines begin to heartbeat, not aggressively, but just enough to “disturb” the stillness, giving the music a twitchy, LCD Soundsystem-inspired force. It’s an undetectable tension: the groove encourages movement, while the lyrics invite thinking. Brighter Future does not provide easy answers; rather, it challenges the listener to rethink what optimism even means in a dystopian society.
