The Speed of Sound – Permafrost

The Speed of Sound’s “Permafrost” is a sweetly nostalgic track that combines melodic rock with small jazz influences, leading to a unique mood of warmth and mindfulness. The guitar lines in the song have a 1960s psychedelic air to them, comparable with Jefferson Airplane, and the vocals bring vibrant scenes of frozen memories and distant feelings. The band’s capacity to combine nostalgic themes with gentle jazz touches gives the track dimension, boosting its sorrowful but everlasting nature. These jazzy moments feel like short memories reappearing providing an extra detail of psychological complexity. Surprisingly, despite its title and idea of frozen inactivity, “Permafrost” was created during the warmth of a hotel balcony in Portugal in 2019, long before the world entered the uncertainty of lockdowns. According to the band, the song’s atmosphere of stasis and stillness is inspired by the seventeenth-century frost fairs held on the icebound River Thames—a powerful metaphor for frozen moments in time. The Speed of Sound smoothly represents an atmosphere of desire and frozen time, making this single an important one in their career.
