Tulipomania – Absolution

Tulipomania’s latest album, Absolution, is a deeply atmospheric and cinematic experience that combines dark electronica, unusual percussion, and expressive vocals. Inspired by famed author Jeff VanderMeer’s offer to contribute music to his novel Absolution – the surprise fourth volume in the Southern Reach series—this CD achieves a strange but romantic atmosphere that mixes with VanderMeer’s strange writing. The album includes a plethora of beautiful tracks; however, the first 3 tracks are my favorites:

You Had to be There (Absolution Mix): This tune begins with a dark electronica vibe, reinforced by dramatic synths that combine romance and fear. The composition is a synthesis of emotions that involves the listener in a sound dreamscape.

And Then (Absolution Mix). This music is an attractive mix of alternative rock and drum and bass, with echoes from David Bowie’s experimental electronic phase. The groove-driven beat vibrates throughout the song, providing a hypnotic strength that is futuristic and nostalgic.

Strange: Strange, as the name suggests, creates a strange but interesting atmosphere. The track unfolds in surprising ways, and its dramatic musical themes provide an enigmatic element that keeps the listener engaged.

Absolution develops on creativity, combining electronic soundscapes, groovy trip-hop and drum and bass beats, along with devoted vocals. The album’s gothic romanticism is almost “tangible,” with lead singer Tom Murray’s voice easily changing between softness and dramatic passion. Cheryl Gelover’s synths offer an ethereal layer to the music, which expands its dramatic range. Absolution’s sound design, full of dynamics and layered complexity, pairs with the dramatic storytelling found in film scores, providing a musical experience that is  visually striking. Fans of darkwave, electronic rock, and dark soundscapes will find Absolution by Tulipomania to be an intriguing experience.
