O Kanenas – Giorti Zeibekidon

O Kanenas performs an ambitious and enthusiastic reworking of “Giorti Zeibekidon,” originally written by Apostolos Kaldaras with lyrics by Pythagoras and memorably performed by George Dalaras in 1972. True to their approach, the band turns this beloved classic into a bigger, more modern epic while maintaining the song’s energetic character. The music begins with groovy drum rhythms that set the basis for the electric guitars, which replace the traditional bouzouki sound of the original. This change leads to a rebuilt sound that combines Greek musical heritage with progressive rock vibes. There’s a clear tribute to Jethro Tull, especially in the heavier, epic nature of the arrangement, but with a unique edge that stays loyal to O Kanenas’ rock personality. While the speed is almost similar to the original, the band dramatically raises the level of aggression, particularly through technical and strong electric guitar work. These guitars offer a new perspective, revealing the flexibility of the song’s core melody. The bouzouki is notably absent, which could have provided as a link between the original’s traditional sound and this daring cover. Incorporating it into future versions could improve the track even more, offering an additional level of respect while maintaining the updated energy. Overall, O Kanenas’ “Giorti Zeibekidon” is a significant and innovative reworking of a traditional Greek story.
