Princess Ugly – Wobble Walk
Princess Ugly’s “Wobble Walk” is a rough piece that combines the primal energy of post-punk with experimental rock. This five-piece band, formed in Brighton in early 2024, begins the song with a dominant bassline that establishes a vibrating vibe. Shortly afterwards, the vocals appear, offered in a near-narrative style reminding of The Fall, but featuring an unexpectedly melodic touch that moves toward pop, due to the back vocals. The song’s core is obviously post-punk, but with an emphasis on vocals and storytelling, which draws listeners into its poetic and emotional world. The guitar work is frequently diving into an experimental funk rock style that recalls Frank Zappa’s anarchic, boundary-pushing attitude from the 1970s. Despite these many inspirations, the song’s attitude remains punk, with a rebellious, open spirit. At 2:20, the lead guitar performs a wild, chaotic solo that includes bursts and distortions that temporarily “destroy in a creative way” the song’s structure, before returning to its normal post-punk groove. From there, “Wobble Walk” moves to its conclusion, strongly grounded in the genre’s classic style but supported by the band’s individual ideas.
