Yorige – Motina (bonus tracks release)
Yorige’s EP, Motina, is a very atmospheric and deep trip into the world of Lithuanian folk music, with eight tracks that combine acoustic and electric instruments to create a sound that is enigmatic. The EP borrows influence from classic Lithuanian melodies and folk themes, also recalling the musical inspiration by musicians such as Wardruna while providing its own unique touch with female vocals and lyrics spoken in Lithuanian. The second tune, “Oželis,” has an ambient feel and production similar to Enya, with ethereal compositions that surround the listener. The lyrics of “Oželis” represent a magical relationship with a goat, described as a symbol of life and nature, which is then murdered in the fall. The song expresses the cyclical nature of life and death, and the pronunciation of the words increases the sense of foreboding and respect for nature. The third track, “Rūta Žalioji,” is a highlight of the EP, combining elements of dream pop comparable to the Cocteau Twins. The arrangement is beautiful and interesting and the vocalist’s relaxing, ethereal voice triggers feelings of peace. The simple but emotional lyrics mention the rue plant, a repeating emblem of fertility and return. The repeated line “Let me go home” adds a dimension of desire and nostalgia to this composition, making it emotionally strong. The Lithuanian language plays an important role in the album’s mystery, saluting the folk-inspired instrumentals. The combination of classic themes and new sounds creates a wonderful balance that keeps the listener fascinated. Overall, Motina is a wonderfully made EP that provides a new perspective on Lithuanian folk music, enhanced with ambient production and a magical air. Each track creates colorful scenes in the listener’s creative thinking, taking them to a world of ancient rites, nature, and folklore. The EP also includes 2 bonus tracks: “Punkul Pulkun” and “Palaisiu Pavu.””Punkul Pulkun” begins with hymn-like singing and epic percussion, nevertheless the song additionally expands on indie rock with gentle melodic guitar lines. The usage of traditional musical instruments enhances the song’s ethnic atmosphere. The electric guitar has a modern vibe that contrasts nicely with the traditional singing style, providing the song a unique blend of ancient and modern sounds. “Palaisiu Pavu” creates a dreamy mood with gentle musical lines. Ethereal vocals appear at 0:27, with the music acting as a backdrop. The production focuses on the vocals, providing them with a soft, floating aura. At 2:18, the electric guitar becomes stronger but never takes over completely the stage, maintaining the track’s folk-inspired flavor untouched.
