Joe Geni – City of Light
Joe Geni’s “City of Light” is an atmospheric song about human perseverance and the power of community. The song, produced by Charlie Nieland, whose work with artists such as Debbie Harry and Blondie has given it a polished touch, has a peaceful, nostalgic sound that brings to mind the mid-tempo, dreamy vibes of ’80s bands like Talk Talk and Simple Minds. The music begins with dreamy synth pads, providing a relaxing tone and inviting the listener into an ethereal state of mind. As the drums enter, the production’s depth begins to develop, with layers of sound creating a stimulating atmosphere. The sound seems expansive and particular, balancing warmth and distance, much like the concepts explored in the song. The introduction of an electric guitar around the 2:00 point gives the song a romantic, nostalgic feel. This guitar emphasizes the emotional weight of the chorus and provides the song an universal sense. It’s a reminder that music can be positive and reflective, similar to the sensation of reuniting with friends and community after being alone. The interaction between the instruments and Geni’s vocals seems organic and is closely related to the song’s themes of healing and optimism. Lyrically, “City of Light” draws on the common sorrow and challenges of previous lockdowns, nevertheless it is eventually a song about getting together to overcome darkness. Geni’s words, “It takes courage sometimes to show up to life at all,” strike accurate, illustrating the hardship of just surviving horrible times. However, there is a positive undertone throughout, particularly in the assertion “I know we’re going to be OK, because our city is a city of light.” It’s a message of comfort, expressing optimism that, despite the difficulties, human connection will help us get through. The song’s calm pace and appealing melody make it sound like it was produced in the 1980s, nevertheless it is well suited to today’s emotional environment. “City of Light” is a calming, self-aware piece that combines nostalgia and progressive optimism.
