Oïkoumen’s “Impulse” combines progressive and symphonic metal, highlighting the band’s unique sound. The tune begins with an incredible cinematic burst of strings immediately takes you into an atmosphere, with layers of epic percussion and a powerful electric bass providing dimension. As the electric guitar enters with a symphonic metal style, it’s evident that the band is influenced by legends like Nightwish and Within Temptation. The arrangement is strong and melodic, but what differentiates “Impulse” is the emphasis on balancing metal and neoclassical components while other bands insist on pushing towards the “metal” direction. At 0:54, female operatic voices arrive, taking the tune to a new level. The soprano draws attention with her rising, impassioned performance, reflecting the majesty and grace of symphonic dimension. Her performance is honest and  technically brilliant, bringing an emotional significance to the words. The mix is unique for emphasizing the symphonic elements, which are sometimes overlooked in comparable compositions by other bands who favor louder, heavier sounds. Oïkoumen emphasizes orchestral components, producing a deep and complex mood. The guitar solo at 4:06 is a technical highlight, recalling the complex musicianship and precision that defined 1990s progressive power metal. It provides an exceptional counterweight to the grandiose orchestral compositions, combining virtuosity and musicality. Overall, “Impulse” finds a delicate balance between symphonic majesty and progressive complexity, resulting in a cinematic experience.
