Coal Canary – Talk Is Cheap

2 min read

“Talk Is Cheap” by Coal Canary is an unusual combination of old-school punk with a lo-fi edge that recalls The Beatles’ raw energy during their most “garage band” periods. The tune begins with rough, lo-fi guitars that quickly establish a tone of rebellion and nostalgia, hooking you in with a sound that is  pleasantly unconventional. The lo-fi element is strong and can be an unpopular feature—listeners may be attracted by its raw authenticity or turned off by the rough edges. However, what cannot be denied is its power to trigger a strong response. It lends an element of raw appeal that matches the track’s punk roots. Around 1:04, an addition of 1980s-inspired synthesizers introduces an unexpected change, turning the music into a more futuristic and cult-like vibe. The synthesizers change the tune, providing dimension and an element of surrealism, rather than simply serving as a background. The vocal style, which reminds of The Fall and the No Wave scene, is equally split. It’s raw, even aggressive, and has a unique character that demands attention. The vocals, like the lo-fi sound, will either attract you or turn you off, but one thing is certain: you won’t be able to ignore their trash-Punk vibe. “Talk Is Cheap” is a music that challenges its audience. It refuses to adapt to conventional perceptions, instead having fun in its distinctive combination of inspirations. Whether you end up like it or not, this song grabs your attention and makes an impact.
